Atatürk University Gender Equality Unit
Gender is the genetic, biological, and physiological characteristics of a person as male or female; Gender, on the other hand, defines the roles, responsibilities and behaviors deemed appropriate by society for women and men. These roles, responsibilities and behaviors may differ from society to society, and may also change over time or in times of crisis. In addition, socially structured and gender-segregated roles and stereotypes may lead to the individual’s restriction, exclusion, and/or discrimination. In this case, there is discrimination based on gender.
Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Providing equal chances and opportunities to everyone regardless of gender discrimination is an indispensable part of Atatürk University’s management approach. For this reason, it has aimed to ensure gender equality with various policy documents, units and commissions.
Gender Equality Action Plan
In order to ensure gender equality, Atatürk University accepted the “Atatürk University Policy Document Against Gender Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Violence” in the Senate in 2017 and committed to stand against any action that may arise from gender discrimination. In 2021, this policy document was updated as Atatürk University Gender Equality Policy Attitude Document. As a requirement of this policy document, a Gender Equality unit, which will work under the presidency of a Vice-Chancellor, has been established within the body of ATAKSAM (Atatürk University Women’s Issues Application and Research Center). Under this unit, ‘Gender Equality Action Plan Monitoring and Evaluation Commission’ and ‘Committee for the Improvement of Gender-Based Problems’ were established.
In addition, by ratifying the Atatürk University Women’s Empowerment Policy Document in 2020, it undertakes that actions, attitudes and behaviors aimed at preventing women’s empowerment will not be ignored and that all necessary measures will be taken for the enforcement of sanction mechanisms.
Atatürk University Gender Equality Action Plan (2022-2027) was prepared by the Gender Equality Action Plan Monitoring and Evaluation Commission.
